**As of February 20th, we have raised $122,250 toward our $150,000 goal. Thank you!**

We invite you to join our effort in creating the Jeanette M. Acosta Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be endowed and serve as a memorial to inspire future generations of law students at UC Hastings College of the Law. The La Raza Law Students Association launched this scholarship fund raising effort in April 2018.  Jeanette Acosta ’16 passed away on December 18, 2017 after a valiant year-long battle with cervical cancer. Jeanette had a tremendous spirit and impacted and inspired persons through her unconditional love and support of others.

Jeanette had many purposes and missions in life. She fought for social justice, civil rights, children’s rights, educational equity and immigrants’ rights to name only a few. Jeanette dedicated her life to making the world a more just and inclusive place. She was driven to empower young people through educational opportunities and led a scholarship fund for low-income students at the University of Southern California where she graduated cum laude. She was awarded the school’s Laurel and Palm award for her outstanding leadership contribution. Before joining the UC Hastings community, Jeanette earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government while also developing initiatives and expanding her advocacy for undocumented immigrants, particularly DREAMers.

While a student at UC Hastings she was a Tony Patiño Fellow, Student Attorney with the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic, Co-Chair of La Raza Law Students Association and Executive Notes Editor of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly. As a law student she served as an extern with the California Office of then Attorney General Kamala Harris. Her scholarly dedication, social justice advocacy and leadership at UC Hastings College of the Law earned her the Student of the Year Award. She was a Student Speaker at the 135th UC Hastings Commencement, May 2016. Upon graduation Jeanette became a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Anna Blackburne-Rigsby of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. In 2017, Jeanette was honored with the UC Hastings La Raza Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2018, Jeanette was awarded posthumously the Woman of Inspiration Award by Ms. JD and the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, and the In Memoriam Award by the Mexican American Bar Association.
